STELLENBOSCH WASTE-TO-ENERGY PROJECT

This waste-to-energy project involved converting pig manure locally secured at a farm in Stellenbosch into a renewable energy called biogas.  Our team used the anaerobic digestion process. Through anaerobic digestion, four gases are produced, these are methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and water vapour.  Through our technology and processes, undesired components are removed to extract and achieve a pure source of energy which is bio-methane which has a methane content of 75%-80%  as opposed to bio-gas which has methane content of 40%-60%.

Once produced, our technology liquifies the biomethane at 26-41 bar with the result of compressing the bio-methane to 8-bar into normal LPG cylinders tanks.

Through locally sourced South-African materials, our engineering technology tested the performance of our biomethane through use of a reciprocating engine on a dual system for comparison. The dual system feed input was a gaseous fuel and the liquid fuel. The liquid figure was normal off-the-shelf petrol and the gaseous fuels were LPG and biomethane. The results showed that the biomethane out performed all the other sources of energy.

UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG PEETS PROGRAMME SANEDI (SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTTE) PROJECT

This project received a ZAR10 million funding from the Department of Science and Innovation and was rolled out by the Department of Energy under the auspice of the SANEDI (South African National Development Institute) Project. Under the SANEDI Project, we identified communities to implement renewable energy solutions towards the alleviation of poverty through provision of lighting and water to meet basic human rights. Our renewable energy solutions were implemented throughout 6 provinces in South Africa and entailed installing solar pumps, installing solar systems, installing solar boreholes, installing waste-to-energy systems and installing pyrolysis systems at household and community level.

SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY RESEARCH GROUP (STERG) CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP) PROJECT

Our team work on a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Our team worked on the maintenance and harvesting of concentrated solar power using reflecting mirrors with the aim of concentrating solar energy onto one point and heating up molten salts. The goal for this process was to use the energy from solar to perform desalination of saltwater/seawater so as to  address the fresh water crisis in Capetown at that time.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT (SIBANYE STILLWATERS)

Our team assisted a company that conducted wastewater treatment Sibanye Still Waters through a PMR (Precious Metals Refinery). Through this PMR System, the metals extracted produce acidic water, alkaline water and ammonia contaminated water. Our engineers treated the wastewater for usage within the community and assisted in the mineral recovery process.

DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION (SOUTH AFRICA)

Our engineers were engaged to work with the Department of Water and Sanitation for the rehabilitation of 13 dams in three provinces in South Africa. This Project remains on-going.
